8. Gooral – Pod Jaworem

Advent!

Vorgestellt und übersetzt von Kuba, Mareike, Gosia und Daria.

Today’s artist connects winter sports, dubstep and folklore – things that don’t necessarily have something to do with each other. However, the differences are not that big any more when you take a closer look. Mateusz Górny – alias Gooral – was born in Bielsko Biała at the foot of the Polish Beskids. Being a skiing instructor in the mid-1990s, he soon started getting into techno music. Since 2001 Gooral experiments with connecting folk music of the Gorals and electronic tunes. His debut album “Ethno Elektro” from 2011 can be seen as his answer to this inter-musical dialogue. Today, he does not only fill clubs in Polish ski huts, but also delights thousands of people at the biggest festivals of the country.

Dancing exuberantly to heavy beats gets together with folklorist elements which, due to the particular dialect, is not easy to understand even for Poles. In fact, it is just another modification of folk music, as we had quite a few times in our past musical advent calendars. Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa (Poland) and La Brass Banda (Germany) are only two examples of this kind of crossover. Here, in “Pod Jaworem” (“Underneath the Sycamore”) it just is dubstep and Goral folk.

Apart from mythical pop art chimaeras, you can discover the so-called “familoki” of the historic workers’ settlement Nikiszowiec, errected during WWI and situated in the Eastern part of Katowice. These characteristical brickstone buildings have been rediscovered as tourist attractions and therefore Nikiszowiec was put under monumental protection. The Silesian Gorals live only 60 km from Katowice, the capital of the voivodeship Silesia. Do you know stories about how and why they got to Nikiszowiec? Tell us in your comments!

So today there is a rhythmic musical goody with a tragic story (you find the translations below).
We wish you, especially with this video, a happy and peaceful 2. Advent!

Presentation and translation by Kuba, Mareike, Gosia and Daria.

Obok mitycznych chimer pop-artowych możecie zobaczyć w dzisiejszym klipie tzw. familoki na historycznym osiedlu Nikiszowiec we wschodniej części Katowic, wybudowanym w trakcie I wojny światowej.

Życzymy Wam przyjemną i spokojną drugą niedzielę adwentu!

Prezentację i tłumaczenie wykonali Kuba, Mareike, Gosia i Daria.
